‘Thought-provoking sculptural pieces, local photography and artwork underscore the sense of pause and peace’

Minimalist, considered, curated – these notions have all become design shorthand – but few places deliver on these concepts in their very makeup. FAITH in Montagu was created by husband and wife team Martly and Hanno Calitz consciously as a place for guests to find quiet contemplation and a real sense of peace. Designed around Cape Dutch, Scandinavian and Japanese principles, the house heroes simple, clean lines, a lack of clutter, and the purposeful placement of objects and artwork.

Created with the help of interior and furniture designer Hendre Bloem, the one-bedroomed pet-friendly haven on the edge of a river in this small but artistic town, is engineered to embrace and elevate the country setting, while also serving as a sanctuary in and of itself. Designed to frame views of the garden or mountains from every room, the open-plan layout offers a continuous transition from indoors to out – where the garden is invited in, and the interiors don’t try to compete with the surroundings. The overriding feeling is one of harmony – where colours, textures, forms and eras have been combined to tranquil effect. Dark and light, nostalgic and contemporary, curves and corners all work together in the space towards achieving balance.

The uncluttered interiors and beautifully unfussy garden, and perfectly oriented rooftop terrace – also serve as vantage points to view the superlative art collection the owners and Bloem have assembled. From Anton Smit’s quietly thought-provoking sculptural pieces – which have been placed prolifically throughout the property – to the selection of local photography and artwork, the artworks underscore the sense of pause and peace.
