Double Tap: Olwethu Leshabane Checks Into Villa Rose

‘I love the idea of being in a bespoke home that has my discerning taste considered. I’d say I am a fussy guest and with Art House Collection I don’t need to worry that a home I stay in won’t feel like home or lend its aesthetic to my comfort. The new luxury is comfort right?’ Olwethu Leshabane, the poly-hyphenate entrepreneur and much-loved social media personality recently called Villa Rose home while in Cape Town shooting a campaign for her new bath and body range, Coco Jane.

Tucked away at the foot of a private lane in the heart of Cape Town, Villa Rose is a charming turn-of-the-century cottage with a wonderfully private garden complete with a pizza oven, outdoor kitchen area, plunge pool and even an outdoor shower under the strelitzia palms. You would never guess that it’s just off buzzing Kloof Street, with some of the city’s best restaurants and design stores within walking distance. The home has art in its bones; the former home of a Cape Town gallerist now belongs to furniture designers from Paris and Stockholm. Like many heritage homes, spaces are generous, ceilings are high and – thanks to the owners’ keen eye for design – the interiors are appointed in standout furniture pieces

AHC: As a first time guest of ours, what was the experience like staying with Art House Collection?

Olwethu: I absolutely enjoyed the comfort of home away from home. I am particularly in love with the aesthetic of the home, it’s something out of a design magazine, with well considered elements that aren’t forced. It still feels like you can live in and enjoy it. I was with my 11-year-old son and he loved it, too, spending time exploring the art and relaxing in the outdoor patio area (even watching the rain on one of the days).

AHC: Stand-out moments for you about the home?

Olwethu: I have an obsession with kitchens – and the mix of materials used in the kitchen at Villa Rose makes you want to spend all day in it. Also, the fireplace in the lounge is definitely a gem. Everything is considered here. And of course that patio area, I spent quite a lot of my time sitting there. The home is really tucked away, which gives you a feeling of being far from the city even though you’re right in it.

AHC: As someone who travels a lot, why do you think there’s a need for these kinds of art-filled homes to stay in, whether you’re on holiday with family and friends or alone on business?

Olwethu: If there’s anything the pandemic has taught us, it is to honour comfort and considered spaces. To be inspired whilst in the comfort of home and not feel an urgency to get out or rush off. And most importantly: to discover new art and design, and find inspiration and ideas.

AHC: If you had to play matchmaker, what kind of guest would you say is perfect for staying at Villa Rose?

Olwethu: Villa Rose is an entertainer’s dream! Are you in Cape Town with a small family and don’t want to spend too much time eating out? It’s for you. Breakfasts on the patio are it! Are you in Cape Town on business and want to show off your culinary skills to your business colleagues? Deck out that patio area with the distinct crockery set for a different/creative kind of meeting.

Villa Rose sleeps up to 6 guests in 3 spacious bedrooms – think time-worn wooden floors and light-filled spaces. The master bedroom has an en-suite while the other 2 rooms (1 with its own fireplace) share an adjacent bathroom. For additional information and to book your stay at Villa Rose click here
