Insider guide: What you need to check out in Cape Town in August

We’ve rounded up some of the latest homes, exhibitions, and restaurants to visit in Cape Town this month

What to do, who to see and where to eat – Cape Town is never short on newness. August is on the way and in South Africa, it’s Women’s Month.

If you’re planning a trip to Cape Town to make the most of the upcoming public holiday, there’s still a lot to check out and add to your itinerary for the month ahead.

EAT

Vadivelu 

Located on Kloof Street, Vadivelu is a hot new Indian restaurant right in the heart of Cape Town. According to the official website, ​​Vadivelu, the name of co-owner Jason’s late father, is a nod to South African and Indian ancestry. 

The cosy eatery has bright and bold interiors, has a host of Indian dishes that are delightful to try, get into the samoosas for starters or dive into the fragrant lamb curry as a main course. There’s a nice variety for both vegetarians and meat eaters, so have a look at the menu when you book. Space is limited so it’s advisable to secure your spot by booking a reservation via their official website.

Monochrome paintings at Stevenson 

If you’re in the Mother City, don’t miss a solo exhibition of new paintings by Zander Blom. The South African contemporary painter is known for taking a unique approach to painting, and challenging the ideals of traditional art or painting techniques. 

His latest exhibition, Monochrome Paintings, opens on Saturday 12 August, 10am to 1pm at the Stevenson. The gallery is located in Woodstock with opening hours Mondays to Fridays 9am to 5pm or Saturdays 10am to 1pm.

If you’re in the city this month, don’t miss Zander Blom’s walkabout of Monochrome Paintings on the day of the opening (12 August) at 12pm.

Oh So Quiet at WHATIFTHEWORLD 

Inspired by singer Björk’s 1995 hit song, WHATIFTHEWORLD’s latest group exhibition is titled Oh So Quiet. The group exhibition features a variety of artists, including Brundyn Arts & Culture fellow, Hanna Noor Mohamed.

Located in the heart of Cape Town city centre, the gallery is open from Monday to Saturday and Oh So Quiet runs from 15 July to 29 August 2023.
