In striking contrast to its lively surrounds, this deeply stylish two-level space is built around a lush, light-filled courtyard—a secret oasis in the city connected to Cape Town’s cultural heartbeat. Slip past an unassuming gate along one of Bo-Kaap’s cobbled streets, lined with the historic neighbourhood’s famously colourful houses, and discover a home that delivers one surprise after another.
The Lowdown
Surrounded by the largest concentration of pre-1850 architecture in South Africa, and the oldest surviving residential neighborhood in Cape Town, Bo-Kaap (or ‘Above the Cape’, in Afrikaans) is one of the city’s most culturally nuanced spaces, its history deeply entrenched in the fabric of its identity. The home’s Cape Georgian façade leads into a light-filled, double-level space, with bedrooms tucked around a central lightwell-slash-courtyard garden while, upstairs, the kitchen-dining-living room opens up onto a narrow balcony with Table Mountain views.
Sleeping Arrangements
The primary suite with a King XL bed opens up onto the lightwell/courtyard; the second bedroom with a King XL bed has a tranquil, jungle-like feeling. The third bedroom-meets-office is able to accommodate a third couple or two children on the fold-out King sleeper couch. All bedrooms are en suite.
What To Expect
A home for all seasons, the open-plan living, dining, and fully equipped kitchen area extends onto the balcony, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. On cooler nights, light up the fireplace (and dial up the underfloor heating) for cosy evenings spent indoors. The home is on a power grid that is unaffected by load-shedding.
The Art House Difference
This is more than just a stay—Antoine is a live-in design masterclass. A study in contrast, where minimalist, monochrome interiors stand in bold opposition to the riot of colour outside. The architecture manages to remain faithful to the neighbourhood while still offering a simplified, almost modernist style, while every element has been carefully curated, making the home feel at once luxurious and profoundly connected to its historic surroundings.
