The Low-Down Lucy’s structure employs canopies and symmetrical, double-pitched roofs to make the most of its contained footprint (it has 290-square-meters of living space), while the interior architecture leans toward a Japanese aesthetic, with natural oak and floor-to-ceiling glass. The sea acts as inspiration in the downstairs media room, where glass portholes look into the swimming pool.
Sleeping Arrangements The home has 3 en-suite bedrooms and comfortably sleeps 5 guests. The main bedroom, on the top floor, has an extra-length king-size bed, private balcony and dressing room. The 2 guest en-suite bedrooms – queen-size and ¾ beds – have a rain show and steam shower, respectively.
What To Expect Lucy comes with a fully equipped kitchen, including Gaggenau hobs, a Nespresso machine, double wine fridge, dishwasher and microwave. For al fresco entertaining, there’s a Weber BBQ stocked with firelighters, wood and charcoal in the private garden as well as a 30-square-meter pool deck with four loungers and a hammock. The home is also equipped with a back-up power inverter to protect against any hassle caused by loadshedding (blackouts).
The Art House Difference The bungalow is alive with contemporary art and design, from the James Mudge dining room table (with lines from John Masefield’s poem Sea Fever are carved into it) to artist Conrad Botes’s glass-fronted mermaid cabinets and a one-off surfboard by Mami Wata, shaped by South African surfing champion Hugh Thompson. Equally vivid is the large vase by ceramicist Lucinda Mudge, while in the living area hangs a welded steel piece by Barend de Wet.
Spot the ceramic and platinum decorated ‘Hope Bird’ by Jaime Hayon for Bosa on the entrance counter, a bench by local artisan Laurie Wiid van Heerden (hand-painted by artist Lionel Smit), Frank van Reenen’s ‘Monster Love’ (a many-eyed otherworldly creature wrapping a girl in its green embrace), Sanell Aggenbach’s bronze ‘Pietà’ (a rabbit-themed reinterpretation of Michelangelo’s masterpiece) and on the deck, bronze artist Guy du Toit’s giant hare sculptures climb up the wall.
